We know the common scenario: The junk is piling up and space is running out. We have all been through this routine umpteen times and living in an apartment with all this junk can prove challenging when looking for places to store things.

Throw a standing clock on the top and line each bench below with books like a bookshelf. Make sure and add some attached support from the wall and, viola, you have a standing bookshelf.

Organized Entryway- When you come into your apartment, think of all the junk you bring in with you. From coats and hats to phones, mail, and keychains, the amount of stuff that you bring in with you and empty from your pockets far out number the junk going out. So, keep it all close to the entry. Line you entryway walls with hooks to hang coats, keys, and hats. Set up a small shoe organizer to keep those muddy foot pieces on the linoleum floor. Install some hanging drawers and a wall shelf to store the mail, tax write off receipts and other small pieces that get lost anywhere else in the apartment. Add a piggy bank or a cool change jar to the mix to chunk all the spare change that dump out of your pockets. Lastly, put a small, tasteful waste basket near the door to rid of the candy wrappers, unneeded receipts, and other bits of trash before it enters your lair.

The Invention of the Wheel

The wheel was first diagrammed on ancient clay tablets as early as 3500 BC. It was probably used initially on Mesopotamian chariots in 3200 BC. I can hardly believe the articles that I have read online that claim the wheel wasn't used anywhere in the Western Hemisphere until after contact with Europeans. Seems unfathomable.

Shoe Storage Ideas - Thinking Outside the Shoe Box

Sometimes finding space for shoe storage simply means using space you already have, knowing what products are available and being creative... "thinking outside the shoe box" if you will.

How much space do you have?

You need to have good measurements for your closet or entryway.  Closet products are generally sized in 12 inch intervals as a closets are usually 24 inches deep but your entrance way can be large enough for a storage bench or small enough that it won't even accommodate shoe storage so get good measurements.

 How many shoes need to be stored? 

Which shoes do you wear most often and which ones are simply stored away?  We usually only wear about 20% of what we own so some of your footwear will be worn often and those are the items that you need to keep readily accessible.  Everything else can be stored away.

Boxes- boxes are suitable for storing shoes that are not to be accessed frequently.  Look for clear plastic boxes so you can easily identify what is in there.  Make sure if you are using boxes for shoe storage that are all of the same variety and that they are made to stack together. Shoe racks - shoe racks can be plastic coated metal, laminate, and melamine covered particle board and even real cedar.  Look for shoe racks with stackable components so you can use the vertical space in your closet. Try raising the closet rod to 72 inches and then putting the shoe rack on the floor.  This arrangement provides space for shoe storage and still allows enough vertical space above your shoes for hanging garments.  You will need about 8-9 inches per pair of shoes so a 24 inch lineal space on a shoe rack could accommodate 3 pairs of shoes stored side by side.  Generally shoe racks made for storing shoes in this way are manufactured in 24 inch widths. Underbed shoe storage - some products are now made to fit underneath the bed to provide use of space that is otherwise wasted.  Underbed  units are made of either soft plastic or rigid plastic boxes with hinged lids.  This is another shoe storage idea for those shoes that are not accessed often.  If you need extra space under the bed to accommodate a storage unit then raise the bed a few inches. There are specific products available called "bed risers"  that can be used to get the bed a few inches higher in order to make the  horizontal surface under the bed more usable for storage.  You can even go to the big box store and purchase bed casters that are adjustable to different heights and they might provide the few extra inches you need.

Think  "outside the shoe box"

It is not always necessary to use a product designed for shoe storage if you want to store shoes.  Other types of furniture can sometimes do just as well.  I have seen metal lockers,  book cases, storage baskets, and even laundry baskets used to corral those loose shoes.

Here are three ideas for shoe storage that essentially make good use of products that were designed  for something else.

Do you have a  big decorative clay pot?  Instead of planting a plant in there and dealing with all the dirt and constant watering use it to store shoes right by the entry way. A  vertical CD holder  doesn't have to be for CD's, some of them are great for storing your footwear. One of the most creative shoe storage ideas I have seen is the use of an  entertainment unit  placed at the end of a king size bed.  It is often hard to find a bench that will span the entire width of a king size bed but this unit fit perfectly and the owners used the "cubbies" for shoe storage.  If also provided a perfect place to sit while donning shoes.

So if you want new and original shoe storage ideas for all of those shoes you have on the floor and not on your feet, just get creative and think outside the shoe box.

Grace Your Home With an Antique Game Table

Today when someone talks about getting a game table, they are often referring to pool, ping pong, air hockey or foosball. But most of these types of games have not been around for very long, and some are as new as the 1970's! But you can find antique game tables, and they are very nice, stylish and collectible. But they cannot be used for table tennis, hockey or foosball!

Most antique game tables are smaller than what we think of today, and are made of wood. Some were also quite ingenious. One I found was a beautiful mother of pearl and ebony table made in China in the mid 19th century. It was wonderfully inlayed with detailed oriental scenery and figures. This game table had a single, three footed leg, though most I found had the traditional four legs! The sides of the table curved inwards and the corners were rounded and fancy. The center of the table had a removable chess board on one side, and the table design on the other. When the chess board was removed, a recessed backgammon board was revealed on the inside of the table, and there was also a small drawer for storing game pieces.

The idea of a removable chess board with a recessed backgammon board underneath was not unique. Another game table I found was similar, but had some other unique features. This second table is round, made out of hardwood with a light finish and a beautiful inlay design. It has two drawers and, more unusual, four drink holders that pull out from the sides. This style table is heavily reproduced.

Many square or rectangular tables opened up to reveal a felt playing surface underneath, perfect for cards. Though a game table like this was similar in function to many others, they did come in many different styles. With a bit of searching, I found one from the French Napoleon III period from the 1860's with a black lacquer and gilt bronze finish. Another one I found was a rare English table made of solid walnut with a burl finish. Not as fancy, but still elegant.

Another French table that I found was a mahogany table from the Jacob period of the early 19th century. This game table appeared to be a small writing desk with a gold-embossed leather writing surface. But the top could be flipped over to expose a green felt card playing table, or the top could be completely removed and inside was found an ebony and ivory inlaid backgammon board. This great table also still had the original white and green tinted ivory playing pieces.

Though, I would have to say that the most deluxe and versatile table I found was from 19th century Paris. At first glance, this table looks like an ordinary side table, measuring 31" wide by 26" deep, with beautifully carved legs with casters and leg supports. But the table conceals multiple playing boards for backgammon and chess or checkers, as well as a pull out roulette wheel! But that is not all, this game table has more. The legs pull out to extend the table to a full 93", what appears to be a decorative part of the legs becomes the middle leg support. The table top then unfolds to a long, rectangular felt top, which I believe is for a form or carrom or billiards. This is a really cool table!

So, if you are in the market for a game table, perhaps you need the modern version that invites rowdy game play for the whole family. But perhaps your life has quieted down and you mainly enjoy cards and some board games with friends. Then perhaps you should look around for an antique game table to grace your home and impress your friends.
